The Definitive Scarlet Begonias
Aside from the usual '74 magic and the notoriety of this Philadelphia two-night run, the "Scarlet Begonias" here is absolutely amazing. I'm not sure why, but 8/4's performance seems to get all the glory, but the jam here is just so much more heady. Just listen to how Jerry, Bob, and Keith weave around each other and add distinctive little fills and changes in unison.
This is the best-sounding version.

Messrs Lesh & Lagin impress with performance of improvised, electronic programmatic music
Seastones begins with a tranquil prelude, followed by much stillness. This matrix recording allows you to really feel the tension in the audience as Ned makes minor adjustments to the elements of his prepared electric piano whilst Phil ponders the wonders of his shoelaces for almost five minutes until Ned finally manages to coax a high-pitched squeal out of the over-elaborate instrument. Phil responds with a series of squelchy feedback swells until he slouches into a steadier series of resonant drones. Ned explores the gamelan-like possibilities of ring modulation and the two musicians quickly find a groove that settles the crowd into near-paralysis. a call-and response sequence of delicate music concréte ensues, with Phil probing the depths with almost trombone-like slithers. The calmness is interrupted by rhtymic clusters of spiky overdriven circuits that mellows quickly as we are led into a vivid quasi-aquatic arena of slippery-but-friendly anemones. An almost blinding buzzsaw beacon of a drone emerges from the shadow, and the crowd goes wild. the climax brings to mind a raucous confrontation between rival demons as viewed through a peephole in a toilet plunger. More than just a seastones sequence, this performance tells a story. It is somehow akin to a sonic libretto for an unwritten ballet. Very Stravinsky-esque, don't you agree? Great to have a standout Seastones in such a vivid matrix presentation!

Really dig the second half of China Cat jamming into I Know You Rider. The band's sense of timing is pretty impeccable when they're "On". Must Have Been the Roses is another gem. Enjoy!

Just a quick thanks to Dave for this version. I can't imagine how much work goes into producing these matrices(?), but they're awesome. The AUD recording of this show isn't the best, even from an AUD-lover's perspective (the audience's excitement and arena acoustics [if any!] aren't captured very well). But the AUD+SBD matrix here does pump life into the SBD for the best recording we have of this show right now, IMHO. Thanks again!
